I must begin with one of the most well-known quotes from the Kauai-based Disney film Lilo & Stitch:

Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind.

— Disney’s Lilo & Stitch

And this one from Parks & Recreation co-star Adam Scott made me laugh:

Chasing kids on the beach and sleeping is the closest I come to exercising while in Hawaii.”

— Adam Scott, actor

Of course, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was raised in Hawaii, and the islands have served as the backdrop for many of his filming locations.

“I grew up in a musical family; the majority of my growing up was done in Hawaii. It’s what we do. You sing, you dance, you play ukulele and you drink.”

–Dwayne Johnson, actor and former wrestler

Bruno Mars was raised in Hawaii as well. If you have a picture of a ukulele or live music, this saying might fit well with it.

“Hawaii is paradise. It sounds cheesy to say it, but there’s music in the air there.”

–Bruno Mars, musician

This quote sums up a nighttime beach stroll or an ocean sunset perfectly:

For me, the magic of Hawaii comes from the stillness, the sea, the stars.”

— Joanne Harris, author

The spirit of Aloha manifests in several ways:

— Abraham Akaka, reverend

Any kind of vibrant photograph in Hawaii will look amazing with this saying:

— Will Rogers, actor

A beach clean-up or other volunteer project in Hawaii would be a fantastic fit for this saying.

“Growing up here in Hawaii, I loved swimming, surfing and having fun in this paradise we are lucky to call home. But I gradually realized that I was actually happiest when I was doing things for other people, doing things to protect our water, oceans and beaches.”

–Tulsi Gabbard, politician

The last Hawaiian King said it best, whether you are photographing a free hula performance or a full-fledged luau:

The Hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian People.”

— King David Kalakaua, last king of Hawaii

Use this Hawaiian quote with a picture of a pineapple.

“Even the sweetness of a freshly cut pineapple from Hawaii is a sermon.”

–J.A. Medders, podcaster

And any picturesque image of Hawaii fits nicely with the following words from the late great Hawaiian icon Don Ho:

Hawaii is not a state of mind, but a state of grace.”

— Don Ho, musician

And if you plan to visit the islands again, this quote sums it up best:

The only good thing about leaving Hawaii is that you really appreciate it when you return.”

–Chang-rae Lee, author

This is an excellent one to post in Haleiwa or anywhere else on the North Shore.

“There are a few places around the country, north shore of Oahu would be one that I would point to, where people really look out for each other; it’s a real local sort of a place and once you’re in that sort of ohana, or that family, everybody kind of looks out for each other.”

Mark Twain was a master of language and frequently visited Hawaii. Almost any picturesque photograph would fit well with this Maui statement.

–Mark Twain, author

This Maui statement would be ideal for highlighting your ideal Hawaiian experience, such as hiking, sipping a cocktail, or unwinding on the beach.

“I would rather live one day in Maui than one month in New York.”

— Rand McNally, author

Or this one concerning Kilauea:

— Victoria Kahler, author

Or this one, for both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa:

The beauty of Hawaii probably surpasses other places. I like the Big Island and the two mountains, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, where you can look out at the stars.”

Hawaiian Song Lyrics for Instagram Captions

General Hawaiian Song Lyrics

One of the oldest and most famous Hawaiian songs is called Blue Hawaii, and the following remark sums it up perfectly:

Come with me while the moon is on the sea

The night is young and so are we

Dreams come true in Blue Hawaii

And mine could all come true

This magic night of nights with you”

— Leo Robin, Blue Hawaii

I’m a HUGE admirer of Jack Johnson. Since he was raised in Hawaii, many of his songs are about island life. I’ve included a couple of my favorite Jack Johnson lyrics that are suitable for Instagram captions below.

“Don’t let your dreams be dreams.”

— Jack Johnson, Don’t Let Your Dreams Be Dreams

And for a couple’s post, this one is adorable:

Mmm, it’s always better when we’re together

Yeah, we’ll look at them stars when we’re together

Well, it’s always better when we’re together

Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together

— Jack Johnson, Better Together

And this one is perfect for shots of Hawaiian pancakes:

Waking up too early

Maybe we can sleep in

Make you banana pancakes

Pretend like it’s the weekend now

— Jack Johnson, Banana Pancakes

Hawaiian Song Lyrics about Oahu

If you’ve ever heard the song “Waikiki,” it’s difficult to resist humming it when you’re there. For photos taken at dusk, these lyrics work well.

Wai—ki–ki, at night when your shadows are falling

I hear your rolling surf calling

Calling and calling to me

— Andy Cummings, Waikiki

And while strolling through Honolulu in the evening, there is another Oahu tune that is easy to get stuck in your head.

Each time Honolulu city lights

Stir up memories in me.

Each time Honolulu city lights

Bring me back again

— Keola Beamer, Honolulu City Lights

Hawaiian Song Lyrics about Maui

This is a good song lyric to add to your post if you travel the Road to Hana and take pictures in Hana town.

Heavenly Hana

Where tropic skies are blue

And angels rendezvous

This is paradise

— John Pi’ilani Watkins, Heavenly Hana

The renowned Neil Young even mentions Maui in his song “Hawaiian Sunrise”.

Pretty Maui Mama

Lying over the water

With my sun in your eyes

When you hear the melody play

It changes every day

Oh, Hawaiian sunrise

–Neil Young, Hawaiian Sunrise

Hawaiian Song Lyrics about Kauai

This is arguably the most well-known song about Kauai. These phrases, in my opinion, make a fantastic Kauai caption for any picturesque post.

There’s an island across the sea

Beautiful Kaua’i, beautiful Kaua’i

And it’s calling, yes calling to me

Beautiful Kaua’i, beautiful Kaua’i

— Don Ho, Beautiful Kauai

Although Bruddah Iz is most known for his version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, he also has a large repertoire of Hawaiian tunes. This Kauai song is my fave!

Hele on to Kauai

Hanalei by the bay

Wailua river valley is where I used to play

The canyons of Waimea standing all aglow

The magic of the garden isle is calling me back home

— Israel Kamakawio’ole, Hele on to Kauai

“Hanalei Moon” lyrics provide a great caption for your photo of Kauai if you’re going to the North Shore.

When you see Hanalei by moonlight

You will be in Heaven by the sea

— Bob Nelson, Hanalei Moon

Hawaiian Song Lyrics about the Big Island

This Big Island song about the little town is a complete throwback. And when driving throughout the Big Island, you won’t be able to stop singing it.

I want to go back to my little grass shack

In Kealakekua, Hawai’i

Where the humuhumunukunukuāpua’a

Go swimming by

–Bill Cogswell, Tommy Harrison & Johnny Noble, My Little Grass Shack

Hawaii Photography FAQs

Can you hike the Stairway to Heaven on Oahu?

NO!!! The Stairway to Heaven has been forbidden for years, and anybody caught doing so faces a stiff $1,000 punishment. The City of Honolulu actually decided to remove the stairs entirely in September 2021. So, if you’re thinking about trekking the Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii, please don’t.

Do I need to bring my “nice” camera to Hawaii?

I am aware that many individuals question whether or not to go to Hawaii with their bulky camera. It’s just a matter of preference. It could be worthwhile if you want to dedicate time to taking quality pictures while on your vacation. If not, if your phone has a good camera, it will be much simpler.  I would advise a Go Pro or the Osmo Pocket so you can record videos instead of a heavy camera.

Is it worth doing a professional Hawaii photoshoot?

Totally! Because our children are growing up so fast, our family does one on every trip. Flytographer is the most reasonably priced Hawaii photography service that does quality work, so we enjoy using it.
