This list of Maup cheap eats and restaurants on Maui on a budget was written by Marcie Cheung (a Hawaii travel expert) and contains affiliate links which means if you purchase something from one of my affiliate links, I may earn a small commission that goes back into maintaining this blog.
Maui is not a cheap island.
If you’re visiting for the first time, that’s just something to go in knowing.
A sit-down dinner for two at a resort restaurant can easily run $150 before drinks. Even a casual lunch near the beach can sting if you’re not paying attention.
But after visiting Hawaii 40+ times, I can tell you that eating well on a budget here is completely doable.
You just have to skip the obvious tourist traps and go where locals actually eat.
That usually means driving a few minutes further, sitting at a plastic table, and ordering a plate lunch that could legitimately feed two people.
This guide covers the best cheap eats in Maui for 2026, based on real first-hand Hawaii travel knowledge, and includes what actually changed after the 2023 Lahaina wildfires.
Several restaurants on older lists are gone or relocated. I’ve sorted all of that out so you don’t waste a trip.
You’ll need a car to reach most of these. Grab a great rate through Discount Hawaii Car Rental before you go.
What “Cheap” Means on Maui Right Now
On Maui in 2026, a budget meal lands somewhere in the $10-20 per person range. A few spots on this list dip under $15. Some stretch to $23.
That’s not cheap by most mainland standards, but on a Hawaiian island, it’s the affordable end of the spectrum. Anything under $30 for a filling meal here is a win.
My Favorite Cheap Spots on Maui
Da Kitchen, Kihei
This is my personal favorite on the whole island. Da Kitchen has been around since 1998, has a near cult following among locals, and was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
After closing during COVID, it reopened in Kihei with the original co-founder still in the kitchen.
The portions are legitimately shocking. You look at the plate and think there’s no way you’re finishing it, and then you do.
My must-order is the kalbi ribs: 16 oz of beef short ribs marinated in a homemade Korean-teriyaki sauce and charbroiled. Tender, smoky, exactly what Hawaiian comfort food is supposed to be.
The deep-fried spam musubi is the other thing I always get. It’s their signature, spam musubi breaded and fried with dashi aioli and teriyaki sauce, and it was featured on Buzzfeed Food. It sounds like a novelty. It isn’t.
The Kihei location is at 1215 S. Kihei Rd. Worth noting: the original Kahului location is permanently closed. Kihei is the only one now. Open Monday through Saturday, 11am to 8pm, closed Sundays. Plates run $13-20.
Paia Fish Market, Multiple Locations
For fresh fish at prices that don’t make you wince, nothing on Maui comes close to Paia Fish Market.

Most menu items land under $16, and the fish rotates based on what came in that day, typically ahi, mahi mahi, salmon, opah, ono, or snapper.
I usually get the sauteed mahi mahi or the fish tacos, but everything on the menu is solid.
My habit here is takeout, especially from the Kihei location. Grab the food, drive a few minutes to a beach, and eat with your feet in the sand.
It’s one of those simple Maui pleasures that sounds cliché until you’re actually doing it. Three locations across the island, all open 11am to 9pm.
Geste Shrimp Truck, Kahului
Flying into Kahului? This is your first meal on Maui. It’s a food truck near Costco at 591 Haleakala Hwy, cash only, and routinely called the best food truck on the island.
Order the Hawaiian Scampi: garlicky, buttery shrimp served with rice and a crab mac salad that’s better than it has any right to be. Plates run around $20.
Two things to know: bring cash, no card reader. And expect a line at lunch; it moves quickly, but plan for it. Open roughly 10:30am to 7:30pm Monday through Saturday, a bit earlier on Sundays.
Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop, Olowalu
Leoda’s is on the west side of Maui in Olowalu, south of Lahaina on Honoapiilani Highway.
The original 808 Grindz was in Lahaina’s Foodland Shopping Center and burned in the fire; Leoda’s was in Olowalu and survived.
It’s fully back open daily from 10am to 6pm, and the owners also run Old Lahaina Luau, so there’s real community history behind this place.
The sandwiches are made on freshly baked bread and really good. The main reason to stop, though, is the pie.
The chocolate haupia pie is one of the best things I’ve eaten on any Hawaiian island, and I mean that. The Olowalu lime pie is right there with it.
Personal pies run around $10; savory dishes are mostly under $18. If you’re driving the west side, stop here.
Cool Cat Cafe, Kihei
Cool Cat was a Lahaina institution for over 20 years, a 1950s diner right off Front Street known for award-winning burgers and milkshakes made with Roselani ice cream.
The August 2023 wildfires destroyed it. In June 2024, the owner reopened in Kihei at the Kukui Mall (1819 S. Kihei Rd), with many of the same staff and the same 1950s vibe intact.
There’s a quiet weight to eating here now, knowing what that staff went through to rebuild.
But the burgers are still the best on Maui (they’ve held that title since 2004) and the milkshakes are still worth ordering. Burgers and sandwiches run $10-16. Open daily 10:30am to 9pm.
Joey’s Kitchen, Napili and Kahului
Joey’s Kitchen does Filipino-Hawaiian fusion and has been a Maui favorite for years.
The original Lahaina location is gone, but the Napili Plaza spot (5095 Napilihau St) is still running, and there’s also a Kahului location at 425 Koloa St.
The garlic chicken is the most talked-about item, along with the kalua pork sandwich and loco moco. Plates run $10-18 with generous portions. Open daily 8am to 8pm.
Fork and Salad, Kihei
For the travelers who can only eat so much plate lunch before their body starts asking for vegetables: Fork and Salad solves that problem.
Build-your-own salads with 50+ topping options, grain bowls, soups, and sandwiches, most under $15. Fresh, customizable, and popular with locals for a reason.
At the Pu’unene Shopping Center in Kihei, open daily 11am to 8pm.
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Island-Wide
A chain, yes, but a Hawaii chain, and one that delivers a reliably good plate lunch at prices that don’t hurt.
Chicken katsu, BBQ chicken, kalua pork: pick your protein, get your two scoops of rice and mac salad, and eat. Locations are all over the island and prices stay under $15.
Not the most exciting meal on this list, but never a bad call when you’re between activities and hungry.
Foodland
Not a restaurant, but hear me out. Foodland is a grocery store chain with some of the best poke on the island. The variety is wide and the fish is legitimately fresh.
You can also grab hot musubi, bento boxes, and sandwiches at prices that beat any nearby sit-down option. On long driving days, this is my go-to for a fast lunch.
Tin Roof, Kahului
A local staple with nearly everything under $20. The garlic shrimp and pork belly are the standouts; the spicy chicken sandwich has its own devoted following. Fast, no-frills, very good.
Ramen Ya, Kahului
A proper bowl of ramen under $14 on Maui is a find, and Ramen Ya in Kahului delivers it. They also do curry and fried rice.
Nothing spectacular in terms of atmosphere, but solid, affordable food and a welcome break from plate lunches if you’ve been eating them for a few days straight.
808 Grindz Cafe, Lahaina (Now a Food Truck)
Before the 2023 wildfire, 808 Grindz was a beloved breakfast spot tucked into the Foodland Shopping Center in Lahaina. The fire destroyed it.
They came back as a food truck at 1165 Keawe St in Lahaina (near Foodland Farms), open Tuesday through Sunday 7am to 2pm. Same loco moco, same Hawaiian plate lunches, same energy. Cash or Apple Pay.
Plates run $10-15, and it’s worth seeking out if you’re on the west side in the morning.
Huli Huli Chicken, Hana
If you’re doing the Road to Hana (and you should be, here’s a good Road to Hana tour on Viator if you want a guided version), stop here.
It’s an outdoor stand where the chicken is cooked over a wood fire, and it might be the best chicken you’ve ever had. Gordon Ramsay ate here. Plates are $15-18, open daily 11am to 5pm.
Acevedo’s Hawaicano Cafe
Mexican-Hawaiian fusion with plates around $16 that are stuffed enough to share between two people. The value is real. A solid option if you want something different from plate lunches.
Thai Mee Up, Kahului
An award-winning food truck near the Costco area in Kahului that has taken the Best Food Truck on Maui title multiple times.
The pad thai is the fan favorite, the curry is equally good, and entrees stay under $15. Expect a line at dinner. It moves.
The Best Food Truck Parks on Maui
Two spots worth knowing about if you want multiple options in one place:
South Maui Gardens in Kihei has around 14 food trucks and is considered the best food truck pod on the island.
This is where you’ll find Sweet Hula (more below) and Outrigger Pizza, a wood-fired pizza truck that’s been on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and makes pies in the $9-15 range with toppings like kalua pork and white cheddar mushroom.
The Costco area in Kahului has two food truck parks within walking distance of each other, including Geste Shrimp and Thai Mee Up. If you fly into Kahului and need lunch before driving to your hotel, this cluster is the smartest first stop.
Sweet Hula, Kihei (An Honest Take)
Sweet Hula is a food truck at South Maui Gardens in Kihei (30 Alahele Pl) making what many people call the best acai bowls on the island.

The Honolua Bowl and the Jaws Bowl are the most popular; they use local fruit and you can customize the base and toppings. The medium size is right for one person.
Honest caveat: at $10-20, this is not exactly “cheap.” For an acai bowl it’s on the higher end. But the quality is there and the outdoor garden setting is a nice way to start the morning.
If you’re going to spend money on a breakfast bowl somewhere on Maui, this is where to spend it. Open daily 8am to 3pm.
Maui Farmers Markets
Easy to overlook, and worth your time. Maui has farmers markets scattered across the island throughout the week, and most have prepared food vendors alongside the produce.
Fresh fruit, poke, hot food, local snacks at prices that beat most restaurants. You can also find cheap, locally made souvenirs here instead of at resort shops.
Tips for Eating on a Budget on Maui
Bring cash. Geste Shrimp is cash only, and several smaller spots offer cash discounts or only take cash. An ATM stop before a long driving day is worth it.
Look for happy hour. Many Maui restaurants run food specials during happy hour, usually 3pm to 5pm. If your schedule allows for an early dinner, you can save $10-15 on a meal without much effort.
Try the keiki size. Portions on Maui are enormous at most local spots. The kids’ menu portion is often a full adult meal at a lower price.
Eat your main meal at lunch. Most restaurants have a cheaper lunch menu than their dinner pricing. If you’re flexible about when you eat, shifting your biggest meal to midday makes a real difference over a week-long trip.
Skip the resort breakfast. A piece of fruit and a musubi from Foodland costs almost nothing. Save the food budget for meals that are actually worth it.
A Note on Lahaina
The August 2023 wildfire destroyed most of historic Lahaina. Many restaurants that were staples in older travel guides are permanently gone.
Some have relocated to Kihei, Napili, or Kahului. A small number of spots along the northern edge of Front Street survived, and rebuilding continues on the west side as of 2026.
If you’re visiting Lahaina, go to support the community, but check ahead on any specific restaurant before making a trip for it.
